Repentance from Statism: On Man’s Stubborn Refusal to Wake Up, Turn from Idolatry, and Come Out of Egypt

Leaving Egypt Ministries, Obadiah D. Morris

I have already written how the tyranny and slavery that governments bring upon people are part of God’s judgment against a people who sinfully chase after the gods of human rulers rather than make the Lord their King. God reluctantly allows state worshipers to erect police states as a means of correcting them from their deviant social course of state-building. When men build up statist societies, they must suffer the consequences for their evils. Though this statist society of ours is far from the type of order God desires us to seek and have, it is nonetheless one that He grants us in our sinful wish to have man-kings rule over us.

God has warned us of all the curses that will befall us should we ignore His divine instruction and trust instead on the “laws” of men (Leviticus 26:14-39). If we disobey God, i.e., if we make men (politicians) our “gods,” we will be destroyed. God promises us all these things that are today becoming more evident than ever. If men knew God and His word, rather than believe that the “constitutional republic” has only accidentally veered off-course, none of this would have caught them off-guard. They wouldn’t be surprised that the B-word is the “president.” God promises that “those who hate you will rule over you” (Leviticus 26:17) when men reject God and refuse to profess God as their King (Psa 74:12). We shouldn’t be surprised that we have a police state today, given that our people were dumb enough to think that “law enforcement” agents, enforcing the “laws” of men, were needed for “law and order” and civilization itself. God promises, “I will bring a sword against you” (26:25). We shouldn’t be surprised that our Babylonian system is turning out this way, or that these statist cities will increasingly fail to provide for people. God promises, “I will reduce your cities to rubble” (26:31).

God tells us what happens—He smashes us like He does with all statist societies—when men chase after false gods, like the rulers of the political systems of the world.

“And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 8:19-20).

All it takes is submission to God, rather than submission to men, to be liberated from the tyranny of human government, and yet men find this too much to ask for. They would rather idolize their favorite politicians and call the enforcers of their laws “heroes.”  We have the choice to either be blessed by God, or conquered and utterly destroyed by men who call themselves the “government,” and most men always amazingly choose the latter. As God promises,

“If ye be willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land: but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured by the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it” (Isaiah 1:19-20).

God’s word falling on deaf ears

It is not as if the word of God is unclear, or that we speak in parables when we try to relay it to other men (Ezekiel 20). The real problem is that people just don’t want to hear it. It’s that “their ear is uncircumsized” (Jeremiah 6:10). It’s not that men can’t understand what God is saying, but that they hate God. “The word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it” (Jeremiah 6:10). It isn’t that God’s word doesn’t exist for others to read and find out for themselves, but that “they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord. They accepted none of my counsel and despised all My reproof” (Proverbs 1:29-30). They “neglected all my counsel and wanted none of My correction” (Proverbs 1:25). It isn’t that God hasn’t offered Himself to others, but that “[men have] refused My call, and no one took my outstretched hand” (Proverbs 1:24). And it’s, of course, not that men don’t have eyes and ears, but that “they have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people” (Ezekiel 12:2).

Our people “are impudent and hardhearted” (Ezekiel 3:7). Instead of hearing the word of the Lord, our people “listen to lies” (Ezekiel 13:19). It isn’t that no one ever came to tell such statist rebels of their sin either, or that God is so cruel that He would punish people without first sending prophets to rebuke them, but that they didn’t want to listen.

“I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, ‘We will not hearken'” (Jeremiah 6:17; cf. Jer 11:17).

It is not as if God hasn’t warned anyone of the consequences that must necessarily result—as law—from practicing the worldly philosophy of statism, but that men always refuse to turn away from Egypt and toward the Lord.

“For from the time I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt until today, I strongly warned them again and again, saying, ‘Obey My voice.’ Yet they would not obey or incline their ears, but each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep” (Jeremiah 11:7-8).

But even if men don’t listen to us, as God has anticipated before, we still have a calling upon us to preach His word anyway. God already knows how hard-headed men are and how much they refuse to repent of their wickedness (Jer 8:6).

“Thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee” (Jeremiah 7:27).

We need to point out the statist captivity, even if men falsely think it’s “freedom.” We need to show men they worshiping false idols when they follow after man’s “governments,” even though they don’t want to hear it.

Our situation today

Our first problem in getting men to even think about leaving Egypt is that they don’t even know they’re in it. They think Pharaoh’s “law enforcement” officers are upholding a wonderful system of American liberty. So we have to first point out how different the reality is from the myth of “freedom” that they hold in their heads.

In his book, Last Rights: The Death of American Liberty, libertarian author James Bovard gives a little summary of our political situation today (which still hasn’t been enough to push people over the edge and bring them all back to God). Rightly mocking the “freedom” that most people think we have, Bovard says in the first chapter of his book that

“Americans today have the ‘freedom’ to be fleeced, groped, wiretapped, injected, censored, ticketed, disarmed, beaten, vilified, detained, and maybe shot by government agents.”

Far from having liberty, we are living under thousands of man-made laws, statutes, codes, and edicts today, which are fully made apart from God and His commands. As Bovard points out,

“There are now more than 5,200 separate federal criminal offenses, a 36% increase since the 1990s, along with tens of thousands of state and local crimes.”

This increase in “laws” has, of course, meant that Pharaoh’s “law enforcement officers” (who are worshiped as “heroes” of “law and order”) have been provided with ever-greater excuses to bring men back to Pharaoh’s court rooms and dungeons to extort them and punish them with grueling sentences for violating his phony edicts (e.g., months in a cage for driving without Pharaoh’s permission). As Bovard points out,

“More laws mean more violators who can be harshly punished on command, resulting in the arrests of more than 10 million Americans each year. Thanks to the Supreme Court, police can lock up anyone accused of ‘even a very minor criminal offense’ such as an unbuckled seat belt.”

Some “freedom” we have when the men who call themselves the “government,” who statists foolishly think of as our saviors of society, are a greater threat to men than the “bad guys” who they allegedly “protect” us from. Again, Bovard,

“Today’s politicians never lack a pretext for plundering private citizens. Despite being charged with no crime, half a million Americans have been robbed by government agents on the nation’s sidewalks, highways, and airports in recent decades. Federal law enforcement agencies arbitrarily confiscate more property from Americans each year than all the burglars steal nationwide. The IRS pilfered more cash from private bank accounts because of alleged paperwork errors than the total looted by bank robbers nationwide. Federal bureaucrats blocked landowners from farming or building on a hundred million acres of their own property because of puddles, ditches, or other suspected wet spots.”

It’s not surprising to men who read their Bibles that these things are going on. God guarantees that we suffer under such enslavement by men if we’re so foolish to betray Him and trust in man-gods (i.e., governments) to “save” us. He guarantees that tyrants will come for us if we’re ever so dumb enough to say things like “we need taxes for society” or “back the blue!” And this has surely been the case. As Bovard recounts,

“Police have killed more than 25,000 citizens since the turn of the century, but the federal government does not even bother compiling a body count. SWAT teams use battering rams and flash-bang grenades to attack 50,000 homes a year, routinely terrorizing people suspected of dastardly crimes like spraying graffiti or running poker games. Cops in many cities have been caught planting guns on hapless targets, while corrupt police labs fabricated tens of thousands of bogus drug convictions. Police unions have more sway over government policy than anyone on the wrong end of a baton or Taser. Despite perpetual promises of reform, most police who brutalize private citizens still automatically receive legal immunity.”

We are guaranteed (by God) to live under tax slavery when we forsake the Lord our King for the false kingdoms of men, as we have done (1 Samuel 8). As sure enough—God doesn’t lie—that’s the case. As Bovard says,

“Americans are forced to pay more in taxes than their total spending on food, clothing, and housing. Tax codes have become inscrutable at the same time the IRS pummels people with ten times more penalties than in earlier decades. The Biden administration is racing to hire 87,000 new IRS agents and employees to squeeze far more money out of both rich and poor taxpayers. Inflation has become the cruelest tax as the dollar’s purchasing power fell 17% since Biden took office, fleecing any citizen with a savings account.”

We should expect nothing less than slavery when we make men our “kings.” And sure enough, things have been worsening on this front. As Bovard points out, “The number of inmates in federal prison has increased 500% since 1980, and America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Politicians are more anxious to control citizens than to protect them.”

We should expect ever-more “schemes of men” (Psa 31:20) so long as we set up man-kings as our ruler-gods. Let us not forget the conspiracy that they launched against us in early 2020 (and ongoing), that some are now trying to sweep under the rug.

“Politicians and bureaucrats exploited the COVID‑19 pandemic to forbid any activities they chose, from going to church to buying garden seeds. Governors in most states effectively banned hundreds of millions of citizens from leaving their homes. Shutting down entire states was the equivalent of sacrificing virgins to appease angry viral gods. In Los Angeles, citizens were prohibited from going outside for a walk or bike ride. Tens of thousands of small businesses were bankrupted by shutdown orders, while federal ‘relief’ spurred a $600 billion worldwide fraud stampede…Government officials endlessly invoked “science and data” to sanctify their power. But many pandemic policies were simply Political Science 101, using deceit and demagoguery to domineer humanity.”

As much as the size and power of the American regime had grown by the turn of the century, it has grown even more in the past twenty years. Operation Covid-19 was an expected scheme to come from the national security state that has been built since the beginning of this century (I was surprised they waited as long as they did to hit us with the second major psyop of the century). As Ryan McMaken sums up our post-9/11 world,

“Nineteen years after 9/11, the federal government still has the power to spy on law-abiding Americans with impunity. It still has the power to simply assassinate American citizens—including children—without any due process. American police have been militarized with ‘surplus’ military hardware from various failed and failing wars. The taxpayers will still be paying interest on the trillions of dollars spent on disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan decades from now. Thousands of American troops died for nothing in conflicts that have done nothing to make any American safer. (Hundreds of thousands of innocent foreigners have died in those same conflicts.) Thanks to the reaction to 9/11, governments in the US are now far larger, far more expensive, and far less limited by laws and constitutions than in the past…Governments get away with far more than would have been the case otherwise. This process, which was so greatly accelerated after 9/11, has now been supercharged by the current panic of Covid-19. Government officials issue ‘laws’ and decrees without any debate and without any due process. Americans are ruined, arrested, destroyed, and humiliated in the name of ‘safety.’ Those who dissent and seek to limit the regime’s powers are silenced, threatened, arrested, shouted down, and ignored.”

What does it take?

But the question arises, what gives? Do men have a breaking point where they realize that they need to return to the Lord and that the man-gods of the world aren’t going to “save” them? Why is it so hard for them to see that the State is an enemy of liberty? An enemy of God’s kingdom? Why are people still worshiping the police state even as it grows more dangerous to us? Why are pretend “Christians” behind such evils?

Although the evils of statism are meant by God to rebuke such rebellious people, this by no means suggests that the rebuke comes easy. Indeed, we see it’s coming along quite slowly even as the systems of men grow more powerful and destructive. Even as the global elites proved capable of launching a worldwide scheme against men with Operation Covid-19, still only a few men were awakening to the spiritual evil behind the world system and our desperate need for the Lord to turn back His anger against us.

But Operation Covid-19, as all-pervasive as it was (touching almost everyone around the world and bearing down on us like the psychological operation that it was), is a walk in the park compared to what the elites have planned for us in the future.

How much more abuse by man-gods (i.e., agents of the State) do men really want to endure before they will wake up to the evils and regard only the Lord as their King? Or, as the prophet asks, “Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep rebelling?” (Isaiah 1:5). The prophet pointed out the terrible state of their society, which ours will increasingly resemble so long as men don’t repent from their statism, and yet people still wouldn’t turn back.

“Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers” (Isaiah 1:7).

Hardheaded men in the scriptures

This hardheadedness, this refusal by men to wake up to the evils around them, is accounted for heavily in the word of God. It gives us a picture of the way men treat such evils that surround them today — which is to mostly ignore them, make excuses for them, or wittingly or unwittingly join in on them.

Time and again, God brought His judgment against men and they refused to wake up to their evils.

“You struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent” (Jeremiah 5:3).

The scriptures are full of instances like this of men who don’t hear the word of the Lord because they have hardened their hearts (2 Chronicles 36:12-13; Psalm 17:10; Jeremiah 3:17; Mark 8:17; Ephesians 4:18: etc). Most men don’t want to soften their hearts long enough to hear the word of the Lord.

Men have always hardened their hearts to God’s teaching, which allows for false gods—presidents, lawmakers, law enforcers—to come rule over them. They never want to read God’s scathing rebuke of statism that He gave through His prophets.

“They made their hearts like flint so that they could not hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the Lord” (Zechariah 7:12).

As much as we tell people of their need to repent of their worship of the State, the most dangerous idol in our world, they never listen.

“Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD” (Zechariah 1:4).

We have tried to tell men of the idolatry for the rulers of the world, but they have “stopped their ears, that they should not hear” (Zechariah 7:11). Men usually don’t want to listen to the prophets of God, who express His ethical will against political violence.

“In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion” (Jeremiah 2:30)

Most men simply don’t care to hear God’s word—statist societies get destroyed every time—no matter how much they are given direct and clear prophesy of the destruction that is coming their way.

“This is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am planning a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways, and correct your ways and deeds.’ But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart'” (Jeremiah 18:11-12).

Men simply don’t like giving up their idols. They would rather chase after false, though by no means harmless, idols like governments, presidents, politicians, soliders, police, flags, national anthems, etc.

Men are whores for Egyptian systems

As we have seen already, men are notoriously stubborn and don’t want to accept God’s rebuke even when it comes to global scamdemics, world wars, famines, or being beaten with police batons for not perfectly obeying the orders of one of Pharaoh’s officers.

Those who fall for the lies of statist plunder systems just don’t want to soften their hearts enough to return to the Lord and leave Egypt.

“Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear. Do you not fear Me?, declares the LORD. Do you not tremble before Me, the One who set the sand as the boundary for the sea, an enduring barrier it cannot cross? The waves surge, but they cannot prevail. They roar but cannot cross it. But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts. They have turned aside and gone away. They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives the rains, both autumn and spring, in season, who keeps for us the appointed weeks of harvest.’ Your iniquities have diverted these from you; your sins have deprived you of My bounty. For among My people are wicked men; they watch like fowlers lying in wait; they set a trap to catch men. Like cages full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit. Therefore they have become powerful and rich. They have grown fat and sleek, and have excelled in the deeds of the wicked. They have not taken up the cause of the fatherless, that they might prosper; nor have they defended the rights of the needy (Jeremiah 5:21-28).

Rather than seek the Kingdom of God and live lives based on voluntary exchange and love of neighbor, men always choose the coercion of statism and the “democratic” idea of beating their neighbor with the police baton or locking them in a cage as their means of organizing “society.” (This is how the contradictory “Christian statist” conceived of fulfilling the Lord’s commandments). God shows us the way out of our slave society, but men always seek the path of serfdom. God gets His people out of Egyptian bondage, and men still refuse to listen to the Lord and don’t mind walking right back into Egypt.

“You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt; You heard their cry at the Red Sea. You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew they had acted with arrogance against our fathers. You made a name for Yourself that endures to this day. You divided the sea before them, and they crossed through it on dry ground. You hurled their pursuers into the depths like a stone into raging waters. You led them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they should travel. You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You gave them just ordinances, true laws, and good statutes and commandments. You revealed to them Your holy Sabbath and gave them commandments and statutes and laws through Your servant Moses. In their hunger You gave them bread from heaven; in their thirst You brought them water from the rock. You told them to go in and possess the land which You had sworn to give them. But they and our fathers became arrogant and stiff-necked and did not obey Your commandments. They refused to listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return them to their bondage in Egypt” (Nehemiah 9:9-17).

God’s judgment on hard-headed statists

Men are always more interested in living in Egypt (i.e., the statist society of presidents, man-made laws, and law enforcers who serve Pharaoh’s legal system (Jer 44:8), rather than leaving Egypt. In the scriptures, God destroys such people who, preferring to live under man’s law-systems, refuse to return to the Lord.

“I will take away the remnant of Judah who have resolved to go to the land of Egypt to reside there; they will meet their end. They will all fall by the sword or be consumed by famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by sword or famine; and they will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and reproach. I will punish those who live in the land of Egypt, just as I punished Jerusalem, by sword and famine and plague, so that none of the remnant of Judah who have gone to reside in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah” (Jeremiah 44:12-13).

But as much as the evils of statism—taxes, inflation, depressions, laws, police, etc—are used by God as a tool for correction, men always fail to learn from them. God tears down such prideful societies as statist ones that are based on violence, and still men don’t care to heed the warning.

“I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. These evil people, who refuse to listen to My words, who follow the stubbornness of their own hearts, and who go after other gods to serve and worship them, they will be like this loincloth—of no use at all. For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My renown and praise and glory. But they did not listen” (Jeremiah 13:10-11).

God has instructed men to not worship false gods (Psa 81:9), like the politicians of the world that they have whored themselves out to. He offers the way out of political slavery, but men are always looking for ways to stay in it and ignore God. As always, most men don’t want to listen and remember that God would help us escape the bondage of these people if we followed Him instead.

“I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would have none of me. So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels. O that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in My ways! I should soon have subdued their enemies and turned My hand against their adversaries” (Psalm 81:10-14).

God would take care of statist enemies for us, and yet men are so foolish they think they need a State—the very enemy of liberty and God’s kingdom—to protect them!

God has told His people time and time again to not go after the false gods of the world, and to fear Him instead (i.e., to not fear men and give into their false systems of protection), but they never listen. They always want to continue in their idolatry, such as they have for the State and its rulers. As the Lord has said,

“‘Turn from your wicked ways and keep My commandments and statutes, according to the entire Law that I commanded your fathers and delivered to you through My servants the prophets.’ But they would not listen, and they stiffened their necks like their fathers, who did not believe the LORD their God. They rejected His statutes and the covenant He had made with their fathers, as well as the decrees He had given them. They pursued worthless idols and themselves became worthless, going after the surrounding nations that the LORD had commanded them not to imitate” (2 Kings 17:13-15).

Jesus Christ, the King of kings, points men back to the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), but still so many refuse to come back — in their pride, they refuse to humble their hearts enough to hear His word.

“For the heart of these people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they would see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I would heal them” (Matthew 13:15).

For this reason (their refusal to hear the Lord and know Him), they chase after false gods (governments, socialist ideology) and allow their societies to be destroyed. For “he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity” (Proverbs 28:14).

God has warned against the punishment that comes from such idolatry for pharaohs, flags, officers of the State, etc., but unfortunately almost always has to give a negative report.

“But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt” (Ezekiel 20:8).

For not wanting to hear our preaching that statism is a great evil that brings judgment against societies as ours, and even mocking us instead as “conspiracy theorists,” men (to say the least) get themselves into trouble.

Listening to the Lord

As we see, it takes a lot of humbling for people get closer to the Lord and abandon their own idolatry. Men, in their pride, easily buy into the false ideologies of the world that men have invented. (How humerous indeed that one would claim “the Bible is written by men” all while they would openly considered themselves to be a Marxist or a Keynesian — an explicit follower of men).

But God’s wisdom is available to all, if they’re willing to seek it.

”If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally” (James 1:5).

God teaches those who listen to Him how to fear the Lord (Psalm 34:11) — that is, how to keep one’s eyes so fixated upon God that they would never support the existence of political rulers claiming to be their “protectors.” But when men are too proud, such as are the zealous supporters of government, they are shut off to the spirit of the Lord and go with the lies of the masses. They convince themselves that they must be right about their ideas, even though they’re just another copy of the next foolish guy who is also repeating the tired slogans of statism, like “support the troops” or “back the blue.”

Pride keeps men from seeing the truth of God’s word. Even though we tell everyone of the evils of statism, socialism, Marxism, Keynesianism, democracy, and all the false philosophies of men, they always want to continue buying into the fake ideas of their own minds. They always continue to “walk…after the imagination of [their] evil heart[s]” (Jeremiah 16:12).

If men would humble themselves long enough to get away from their worldly thinking, and turn away from the idols, they could understand what God is all about. If they would learn their lesson and feel the pain of statism around them, they might gain knowledge in the Lord.

“If you had repented at my rebuke, then surely I would have poured out my spirit on you; I would have made My words known to You” (Proverbs 1:23).

God offers that if men will just turn back to Him and attempt to know Him, He will end this refusal of men to turn back to His ways.

“I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 11:19; cf. Ezekiel 36:26).

With even more emphasis, the prophet says,

“Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!” (Ezekiel 18:31).

Repenting from statism

That political plunder has been with men for millennia is proof that they have thus far refused to obey the Lord and seek the Kingdom that He has prepared for us. We have, up to this point, sold out our inheritance to plunderers who claimed to be protectors. It’s high time we turn from statism and repent to the Lord — to apologize for ever being such a foolish idolator and acknowledging the one true King. Then we can put this mess behind us.

“Correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, so that He might relent of the disaster He has pronounced against you” (Jeremiah 26:13).

We must repent of our participation in the governments of men and return to the ways of the Lord. We should not be voting for new masters or kidding ourselves that Babylon can be reformed, but rather seeking the Kingdom of God (Matt 6:33).

If men don’t wake up soon to the evils that they have supported by patriotically throwing their weight behind the Egyptian systems of our day (e.g., the “United States”), we may be in great trouble. If men don’t break out of their basic thinking, repeating such lame slogans of statism like “this is a free country,” they may meet a disaster much worse than we have at the moment. “For the waywardness of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools with destroy them” (Proverbs 1:32). If men continue to follow the statist line of thinking that “public safety” and “national defense” can only be provided by men, they are going to continue to face great plunders and even death. The only way out is to follow God again. “Whoever listens to me will dwell in safety, secure from the fear of evil” (Proverbs 1:33).

Statism, which is nothing but the violence of men pretending to be “law,” is always deserving of God’s judgment. If men don’t turn back and come out of her, they will find this out the hard way.

This is why we preach the word of God, to wake men up before disaster strikes, for we’re already on the wide road of destruction. As God says, “Perhaps they will listen and turn—each from his evil way of life—so that I may relent of the disaster I am planning to bring upon them because of the evil of their deeds” (Jeremiah 26:3). Admittedly, it’s a big “perhaps.” But I believe in the power of God to change men. Amen.

Our calling to preach

But it’s dangerous giving this word to our people. Men are more likely to call us “terrorists” and tell their government-god that we’re threatening their evil social orders for pronouncing judgment upon it, than they are to repent of their ways and come back to the Lord. As the religious elites did to the prophet Jeremiah, “the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people, ‘This man is worthy of death, for he has prophesied against this city’” (Jeremiah 26:11). Men are just as likely to do something today to someone bad-mouthing “our country” — or at the very least telling you to “leave if you don’t like it.”

Nevertheless, we must call our people—our flag-waving, politician-worshiping, bootlicking neighbors—to repentance, for God forbid we forsake the Lord and ignore our calling.

“The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, so that He might relent of the disaster He has pronounced against you” (Jeremiah 26:12-13).

Where are God’s people at?

Though there are probably more of us—God’s people who are awake to the plunderous schemes of political rulers—than ever before, we’re still relatively rare compared to the rest of the population. This was seen in Biblical times, too. When the Biblical prophets went around preaching on the evils and violence of statism, as they were all sent to do, they were laughed at, mocked, incarcerated, tortured, and killed (2 Kings 2:23; 2 Chronicles 30:10, 36:16; Matthew 5:12, 23:34; etc).

As today, there were very few people around in the days the scriptures were written who wanted to wake up to the voice of the Lord and recognize evil for evil. And this is true even among professing “Christians,” who are largely duped by the false god State. As God told the prophet Jeremiah, for instance,

“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem. Look now and take note; search her squares. If you can find a single person, anyone who acts justly, anyone who seeks the truth, then I will forgive the city. Although they say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ they are swearing falsely'” (Jeremiah 5:1-2).

God was willing to spare a city from judgment if just one person realized the great evils going on within it, and yet these people are rarely forthcoming.

Likewise today, few men want to hear the word of the Lord, in large part because it would rebuke them for chasing after these false gods by voting for them or supporting their existence — an idolatry that they want to hang onto. Men push the truth away from them, so they can cling to their illusions.

Notwithstanding all the false claims to being “One Nation Under God” and the tens of millions of people who claim to know the Lord (but who swear falsely), the prophets’ assessment of the societies of their day are almost always perfectly applicable to the statist systems that we still live under today, where millions of Caesar-worshipers refuse to give up their idolatry. If the prophets were writing today of America’s flag-waving police-worshipers, they could likewise say,

“This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth” (Jeremiah 7:28).

When will men turn back to the Word of God to order their lives and stop getting their ideas from the world, which (not coincidentally) most often leads them to statist and socialist thinking? When will they wake up to the evils around them and stop participating in them? When will men wake up to what God is saying, that judgment comes upon such societies as ours that have turned to men and their political systems over the Lord? When will they listen to the Lord? This is God’s simple request to our people, who have found themselves robbed and spoiled (Isa 42:22): “Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?” (Isaiah 42:23).

Men have fallen for the lies of many false prophets today, telling them that statism is stable and will never come to an end — that we should be celebrating “our freedom” today. They have bought into the philosophy and idolatry of statism. The question, again, is when will men wake up?

“How long will this continue in the hearts of these prophets who prophesy falsehood, these prophets of the delusion of their own minds?” (Jeremiah 23:26).

God is not happy to see us ignore his warnings that slavery-by-government is the price to pay for trusting in man-kings over God. He does not rejoice in seeing us enslaved by these governments. Indeed, God hates to see what we have gotten ourselves into today. “My eyes will overflow with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken captive” (Jeremiah 13:17).

Is there a reason men are still asleep?

Since God’s word can turn people back from the false god of statism, which leads to so much disaster, keeping people blind to it until these effects rebuke us even more may well be a part of God’s plan too. We may also be living in a similar day as that spoken of by the prophet Amos, who tells us,

“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord God, ‘when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord'” (Amos 8:11).

We have seen, also, how God hardened Pharaoh’s heart to where he was unable to believe the promises delivered by Moses that his kingdom would be destroyed for refusing to free his captives (Exodus 7:13, 8:19, 9:7, 10:20). Why didn’t God soften Pharaoh’s heart? Presumably, Pharaoh was overdue for judgment, and God wanted to drown his statist military in the sea as they pursued after His people.

Though God usually wants men to wake up to the evils in the world, repent of their participation in them, and turn back to the Lord, God has done the opposite before to see to it that men who refuse to turn from evils like statism are destroyed. As God had a prophet tell men before,

“Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed…until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate” (Isaiah 6:10-11; cf. John 12:40).

Prayer

Lord God, I pray, You have got to wake up some more people down here and turn their hearts back to You! These men are going to get us in great trouble and incite Your anger. I know that You know what You’re doing and have a plan that is bigger than my eyes can see. But if it pleases You, bring some of our friends, family, neighbors, and acquaintances out of their slumber. Open their eyes and ears to Your word. Put Your spirit in them, such that they might feel suddenly compelled to tear down lawn-signs and bumper stickers of their politician-gods and realize what great idolatry it has been to be a statist. Turn men away from the voting booths and stop them from being tricked by the schemes of men any longer. Bring men to repentance! Turn back their hearts away from the gods of the world and back toward You and Your truths! Please don’t let us be stricken with Your heavy rod down here forever, even though we would deserve it for the sin of statism that has abounded in this land. Don’t let these evil governments, the tools of Your judgment, kill us off entirely. Help us to work on Your kingdom and prepare a way out of Egypt. Help us make some big moves soon and really open some eyes to Your messages. We want to serve You as the one and only true God! Amen.
